A new article in Resources, Conservation and Recycling analyses current business models lithium-ion batteries among vehicle manufacturers. The results demonstrate that many manufacturers are pursuing ‘circular’ strategies, mostly focused on repair, refurbishing, and repurposing. Variation in the operationalization appears to be linked to the degree of manufacturer involvement, indicating that business models are context-specific and dependent on internal factors. The article also reviews current and proposed policies that may have implications for current practices. The research was conducted in collaboration with Volvo Group. Mistra-Rees’ researchers Philip Peck, Andrius Plepys and Carl Dalhammar are among the authors.
